This coming Sunday night we'll be closed to the public while we're hosting a get-together of local baristas.
These types of get-togethers, often called "jams", bring together dedicated coffee professionals to share techniques and compare thoughts on coffee and espresso preparation.
Up in the Pacific Northwest barista jams happen with regularity. Jams have popped up in many other locales as well, from Arizona to Texas to Chicago to New York. There have even been jams in Easton and Philly on the other side of PA. But there's never been one here in Pittsburgh until now.
It's our contention that Pittsburgh has the potential to be as important in the coffee/culinary world as Portland, OR. We certainly have the talent here - both food and coffee - to create quality espresso-focused enterprises that can execute culinary excellence. However, we're still lacking the culture to support more than a handful of shops that are probing the edges of what's possible with coffee.
Hopefully getting folks from the better shops together will start more ideas flowing on what and how the coffee-focused indie shops can do to move the perception of Pittsburgh from a supermarket/Mr. Coffee coffee city to one of a cafe-centric lifestyle with a slew of microroasters and excellent coffee bars to choose from.
Gotta start somewhere, so why not here this Sunday.
I love it when someone becomes proactive! Sounds like only a lot of good can come out of something like this!
