In Praise of #2

The official results are in.  We didn't win AOL's poll for "Best Coffeehouse". 

We came in second.

While it's indeed disappointing to not finish as #1, finishing as #2 the first year we were included in the poll is something for which we're proud.  We thank the hundreds of customers who took the time to register votes for us.

In hindsight, there's a lot to be said for #2.  Here are a few points to consider on the merits of #2.

- You can do #1 almost anywhere.  But you seek out a comfortable, clean place for #2.

- A good #2 allows you private time to reflect.  You can even read the newspaper or do a Sudoku while enjoying a #2.

- #1s are usually fleeting.  A #2 will linger for awhile.

- A #2 tells a trained professional what's really inside you - what you're really made of.

- You could step into a #1 and not realize it.  When you step into a #2, you know it.  And so does everyone around you.

- Getting #1'd has a negative connotation, often implying bitterness.  However, being #2 is now considered something very good. 

- And, as noted on this blog many times, the most expensive coffee in the world is, well...

So we'll take being #2.

At the end of the day, while we're still #1'd at AOL for not abiding by their own rules, we're happy for the guys at the The Vault (that's Drew of The Vault at left).  They're good guys and many of them are coffeegeeks themselves like we are.  While it would be a travesty to have some of the milkshake shops at the top of the list, there are no complaints here about the top three on this year's poll.

And that's no #2.

thanks for the props. in our defense, ALL of the employees of the vault are coffeegeeks. there aren't many of us, but we're all giant nerds...

Okay, after that explanation of #2's, I have to say this: Rich: If I ever accused you of being full of #2, I take it back. That was one clever entry! I still think AOL sucks, but Aldo Coffee will always be first in my book!
